Robusta coffee, also known as Robusta coffee , is the second most important coffee plant. About 39% of coffee products are produced from this type of coffee. The world’s largest exporter of Robusta coffee is Vietnam. Other important exporters include Brazil, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire.
Robusta coffee trees are trees or shrubs, and mature trees can reach up to 10m in height. Coffee berries are round and the beans are smaller than Arabica coffee beans. The caffeine content in Robusta coffee beans is about 2-4%, while in Arabica coffee it is only about 1-2%.
Robusta coffee trees can start harvesting at 3-4 years old. The tree produces seeds in about 20 to 30 years. Robusta coffee prefers to live in tropical regions, the suitable altitude for planting is below 1000m. The tree’s preferred temperature is about 24-29 °C , rainfall is about over 1,000 mm. Robusta coffee trees need more sunlight than Arabica coffee trees.
Robusta coffee contains a higher caffeine content than Arabica coffee. Robusta coffee has a bitter, rich taste, suitable for those who like strong coffee. The price of a bag of Robusta coffee is usually only half that of Arabica coffee. Currently, nearly 90% of the coffee area in Vietnam is planted with Robusta coffee.
Robusta coffee has several health benefits. Robusta coffee beans are rich in antioxidants, and in some countries, Robusta coffee has been used as a folk remedy for conditions such as asthma, headaches, and jaundice. Robusta coffee is also used as a mask to exfoliate dead skin cells and excess oil on the skin.
